Kurla Accident: Six Dead, 49 Injured in BEST Bus Collision; Inexperienced Driver Causes Fatal Crash
A tragic accident occurred late Monday night involving a BEST bus, which collided with multiple vehicles on the road, leaving six people dead and 49 others injured. The incident took place around 9:50 PM near Anjum-E-Islam School on S.G. Barve Marg, Kurla (West). According to police, the driver of the bus, who had been hired on a contractual basis just days earlier, lacked prior experience in operating heavy vehicles and did not have the required heavy vehicle driving license.
The driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, but authorities confirmed that while driving with 60 passengers on board, he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. This error led to the fatal crash. The driver has since been arrested and charged with negligent driving and culpable homicide.
At Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, 35 injured individuals were admitted, with two being declared dead on arrival. Two others succumbed to their injuries after admission. Kohinoor Hospital treated three injured victims, one of whom died, while the other two remain in critical condition. Four police officers were also injured in the crash and were taken to Seven Hills Hospital, where their condition is reported to be stable.
Umer Abdul Gafur, a 35-year-old man, was admitted to City Hospital in Kurla, where his condition is still being assessed. Habib Hospital treated six injured individuals, with one confirmed death among them.
In total, six people have been confirmed dead and 49 others injured. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) initially reported the accident, and medical updates were provided by hospitals across the city. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
