Kunal Kamra Responds Fearlessly Amid Joke Backlash and Threats

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has responded unapologetically after facing backlash and threats over his recent remarks, which allegedly insinuated comments about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In a bold Instagram post shared on Monday night, Kamra addressed the situation, asserting that he would not apologise and made it clear that he was prepared to cooperate with the law.
Kamra’s post came amid intense controversy, where his comments sparked outrage among supporters of Eknath Shinde, despite not directly naming him. The outrage led to acts of vandalism at The Habitat, a popular comedy venue in Mumbai where Kamra had performed. Shiv Sena supporters, literally ransacked the hotel premises and the hall where Karma had performed. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) subsequently razed certain parts of the venue, citing alleged illegal construction. “The Habitat’ later issued a statement and announced that they were shutting down till the time they “figure out the best ay to provide a platform for free expression…”
In his Instagram post, Kamra wrote:
"To those who are busy leaking my number or calling me incessantly: I am sure you’ve realized by now that all unknown calls go to my voicemail, where you will be subjected to the very song that you hate."
He also criticised the media’s coverage of the incident, reminding them that “press freedom in India ranks at 159.” Kamra reiterated that he would not apologise, adding, “What I said is exactly what Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st deputy CM) said about Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM).”
In addition to vandalism, Kamra has reportedly received numerous threatening calls. Despite the threats, Kamra has stood firm, stating in his post that he does not fear the mob and will not be intimidated. “I don’t fear this mob & I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down,” he declared.
Law and Order Questioned
Multiple FIRs have been registered against Kamra, and he expressed his willingness to cooperate with the legal process. However, he questioned whether the law would also be enforced on those responsible for the vandalism and threats. Despite the rising tension, the Maharashtra government has yet to issue a statement condemning the violence, raising concerns about the state’s handling of law and order.
“will the law be fairly and equally deployed against those who have decided that vandalism is the appropriate response to being offended by a joke? And against the unelected members of the BMC, who have arrived today at Habitat, without prior notice, and tore the place down with hammers? Perhaps for my next venue, I will opt for Elphinstone bridge, or any other structure in Mumbai that’s in need of speedy demolition”, Kamra signed off taking a dig at the government and the authorities.
