Kolhapur Twist: Shinde Sena–Congress Talks Add New Turn to Mayor Race

The results of the municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra have placed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the single largest party in the state, winning the highest number of seats overall. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) finished second.

However, despite topping the tally, the BJP has failed to secure a clear majority on its own in several municipal corporations. As a result, the party will have to depend on the support of its alliance partners to claim the mayor’s post in many cities. This has triggered intense behind-the-scenes negotiations for mayoral positions across Maharashtra, including key civic bodies such as Mumbai.

The big question now is: in how many municipal corporations will the BJP succeed in installing its own mayor?
Amid these number-crunching exercises, a major political development has emerged from Kolhapur. There is growing speculation that the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) may extend support to the Indian National Congress in the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation. Congress MLA Satej Patil has hinted at this possibility, stating that he cannot reveal the developments taking place behind the scenes. His guarded remarks have further fuelled talk of a potential Congress–Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) alliance in Kolhapur.

In the Kolhapur civic polls, Satej Patil led the Congress campaign almost single-handedly, helping the party secure 37 seats, still short of the majority mark. The BJP has also made significant gains with 27 corporators, while the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) has won 15 seats. With 41 corporators required to form a majority, it was initially believed that a Mahayuti mayor was almost certain.

All eyes are on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is currently in Davos attending the World Economic Forum. Late last night, he held discussions with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde regarding mayoral positions in the concerned municipal corporations.
