JMM-Congress Coalition wins the Jharkhand Assembly Floor Test with the support of 47 MLAs
The JMM-Congress coalition with Chief Minister Champai Soren at the helm won the Jharkhand Assembly floor test on Monday. The alliance secured 47 votes in the 81-member House with the majority mark being 41, while the opposition NDA alliance bagged 29 votes. The floor test comes days after the swearing-in of the new government led by Champai Soren, following the resignation and the arrest of the former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren.
67-year-old Champai Soren took charge as the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand after Hemant Soren resigned and then was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged land scam case. Hemant Soren is currently in five-day custody of the ED. The former Jharkhand CM has refuted the allegations, dismissing them as part of a conspiracy orchestrated by the BJP. A special court in Ranchi on Saturday granted permission to Hemant Soren to attend the Special Session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly and participate in the proceedings of the Floor Test.
In his speech on the floor of the house, Hemant Soren launched a scathing attack on the union government, calling his arrest a conspiracy orchestrated by the BJP. “BJP tried to destabilise a democratically elected Jharkhand government," said the former Jharkhand CM.
Hemant Soren further sharpened his attack and accused the Jharkhand governor CP Radhakrishnan of being instrumental in his arrest. “On the night of January 31, for the first time in the country, a CM was arrested...and I believe that Raj Bhavan was also involved in this incident,” said Soren. Hemant Soren also challenged the BJP to produce proof against him in connection with the alleged land scam case. “Show me the proof and I will quit politics," said Soren.
"We left the jungle, came and sat next to them and their clothes are soiled. They see us as untouchables. If left to them, we would be back in the jungle," asserted Hemant Soren, hitting out at the BJP for undermining and looking down upon the tribal communities. “Tribals and Dalits are not safe under the present regime in the country… I will come back with more strength. Opposition's conspiracy will be thwarted, ”he added.
