Jadavpur University Student Found Unconscious on Campus, Declared Dead at Hospital

A female student of Jadavpur University was declared dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital on Thursday night. The third-year undergraduate from the Department of English, was discovered unconscious, afloat in a pond on campus and was later pronounced “brought dead” by doctors.

According to reports, the student had been chatting with classmates earlier in the evening near the Arts Faculty’s Union room, located adjacent to Gate Number 4. The exact circumstances leading to her death remain unclear. Despite desperate attempts by fellow students to revive her before an ambulance arrived, their efforts proved unsuccessful. “When she was found, her face was pale and she was unresponsive. There was foam at her mouth,” said an eyewitness on condition of anonymity.

The incident occurred while the Jadavpur University Drama Club was hosting its cultural event, Ruhaniyat. Following the tragedy, the event was immediately suspended. The office-bearers of the club later tendered their resignation, issuing a joint statement expressing regret.

“We are sorry. There is no easier way to say this, but yes, we are. We are leaving and there is no way we can take back everything we had, every trouble we caused, every problem we solved, and every memory we shared. Thank you to each and every one of you for making Jadavpur University Drama Club what it is. We couldn’t have done it without you,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the tragedy has triggered anger and political blame on campus. The TMC students’ unit squarely blamed the SFI, alleging that the Drama Club functioned under its influence.

“We’ve learnt that a third-year student of the English Department was first found unconscious and later declared dead. It is shocking that this happened while an event was underway. The Drama Club’s ‘Ruhaniyat’ was in progress, and the club is effectively controlled by the SFI. They must take accountability now,” said Kishalay Ray, President of the TMC students’ unit.

He further raised concerns about lax campus oversight. “Why are events permitted to continue late into the night on campus? Why was there no strict monitoring to curb alcohol consumption and other unlawful activities? Who will be held accountable for this death?” Ray asked.

The SFI’s Jadavpur University unit has not yet issued an official statement.
