Investigation Intensifies into Mumbai-Elephanta Ferry Accident; Neelkamal Crew Under Scrutiny
The investigation into the tragic ferry boat accident on the Mumbai to Elephanta route has intensified, with the crew of the Neelkamal boat now under scrutiny. Preliminary findings indicate that at the time of the incident, the boat was overcrowded, carrying more passengers than allowed, and lacked an adequate number of life jackets, which contributed to the loss of lives.
Following these revelations, the police have initiated a formal inquiry. A senior police official confirmed that the investigation is currently underway. Authorities have completed the panchnama for both the Neelkamal boat and the Navy speedboat involved in the accident. They are now gathering evidence related to the overcrowding and the shortage of life jackets. Further action will be taken based on the collected evidence.
In a related development, the Maharashtra Maritime Board revoked the Neelkamal boat's license three days ago due to the same safety violations that contributed to the accident.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police have recorded the statement of Deep Nikoshe, an employee of an engine company who was severely injured in the incident. Nikoshe, who was aboard the Navy speedboat during the accident, claimed it occurred due to a technical malfunction. The police are also awaiting the statement of Marcos Commando Karmveer Yadav for further clarity.
