“If Govt. Does not take any action, we will”; CJI on Manipur Video
Hours after the horrifying video of two women being violated in Manipur shook the entire nation, the Apex court has summoned the Attorney General and Solicitor General. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud called the video ‘deeply disturbing’ while taking Suo Moto cognizance of the matter “ Let the center and the state apprise us or the steps taken. We will take this on Friday. We will give a little time for government to take action otherwise we will step in.” said CJI.
The incident as been confirmed by the police happened on May 4, a day after the first incident of violence was reported at Churachandpur in Manipur. Complaint over the incident was registered later in the month of May but the first arrest happened on July 20 hours after the CJI came down heavily and said, “Using women as an instrument in an area of communal strife to perpetuate gender violence is unacceptable.”
The remarks of the Chief Justice of India came immediately after the bench convened on Thursday morning. The court made it clear to both Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that “it is gross constitutional violations and infractions of human rights” . Solicitor General Tushar Mehta tried assuring the bench, that situation is calm in Manipur but the bench demanded immediate action from the both state and center.
“We are of the view that court must be apprised of the steps taken by the govt so that perpetrators are booked for such violence.” the bench ordered
The Manipur Police has already arrested the prime suspect, Hera Das who is spotted wearing a green Tshirt in the video.
Manipur chief Minister N Biren Singh also condemned the act and ordered the Manipur Police to start operation in all suspicious areas by gathering all evidences.
