"Hypocrisy of new depths...": Abhishek Banerjee Slams BJP Over Ranaghat MP’s Remark on India-Bangladesh Border

Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, accusing it of reaching “hypocrisy of new depths” following controversial remarks made by BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar from Ranaghat.

Taking to social media platform "X", Abhishek Banerjee accused BJP of blatant double standards. He juxtaposed Sarkar’s statement with the Union Home Ministry’s repeated criticism of the Bengal government for allegedly not providing land for border fencing. “The hypocrisy of the BJP leadership has fallen to new depths,” Banerjee wrote. “Their MP from Ranaghat declares that if the BJP comes to power, there will be no borders between India and Bangladesh, both nations will become one again! On the other hand, the same BJP government, including Home Minister Amit Shah, keeps blaming Bengal for not giving land to ‘protect’ the very borders their own MP wants to erase!” he added.

Banerjee challenged the BJP to suspend Jagannath Sarkar immediately, calling the statement a “blatant assault on India’s unity and integrity.” “If the BJP truly believes in the nation’s integrity, I challenge JP Nadda and the party leadership to suspend this MP immediately. Their silence will only prove that he spoke with the full consent of the top leadership,” he said.

Addressing the controversy further, Banerjee accused the BJP of deceiving the people of Bengal while exploiting their sentiments over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. “This is not nationalism, this is deception. Fooling and humiliating the people of West Bengal in the name of SIR has become the BJP’s trademark politics, a dangerous mix of hypocrisy and betrayal. Look at their own words and decide who’s fooling Bengal,” Banerjee wrote.

In a video that has since gone viral, BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar is heard claiming that if the BJP comes to power, “there will be no borders between India and Bangladesh, both nations will become one again.” The statement, made during a public rally in Matiyari Banpur on Thursday, has triggered a political storm in West Bengal. "We make a solemn promise, if we win the election this time, the barbed wire fence separating us from Bangladesh will no longer remain. The two nations will once again be reunited,” Sarkar was heard saying in a video that has now been widely circulated.

The controversy comes amid escalating tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP over border management and voter roll revisions.
