"Highest quantum of punishment for Sanjay..": CBI on RG Kar Rape and Murder Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recommended that the prime accused, Sanjoy Roy, receive the highest quantum of punishment for the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old PGT doctor of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI made its plea during closing submissions at Sealdah Court on Friday, describing the crime as one of the “rarest of rare” cases warranting the maximum punishment under law.
The incident came to light on the morning of August 9, when the young doctor’s body was discovered at the hospital. Investigations quickly pointed to Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, as the prime suspect. CCTV footage led to his arrest within a day of the crime. Following public outcry and pressure, the case was the subsequently transferred to the CBI. The central agency has also named Sanjay Roy as the sole accused.
In its final submission to the court, the CBI described the crime as "heinous," emphasizing its gravity and the brutality involved. While capital punishment is generally reserved for the most extreme cases, the CBI asserted that this case qualifies due to the nature of the crime.
Allegations of Collusion and Corruption
Beyond Roy, the case has implicated several others. The CBI arrested two others — Abhijit Mondal, the then Officer-in-Charge of Tala Police Station, and Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital — on charges of evidence tampering. However, both were granted bail after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet against them in the stipulated time frame.
While Mondal was released on bail, Ghosh remains in judicial custody, but not for his involvement in the RG Kar case. He is currently detained in connection with a separate corruption case related to the hospital. Both he and Roy are being held at the Presidency Correctional Home.
However, the junior doctors from RG Kar Hospital have raised allegations that former principal Sandip Ghosh, in particular, may have played a central role in orchestrating the crime. They claim that he, along with others, was involved in the planning and execution of the horrific act. Despite extensive questioning, no new arrests have been made in connection to these claims.
The CBI has yet to file a chargesheet against Ghosh and Mondal for their alleged roles in obstructing justice, but the investigation continues.
