Greater Noida Dowry Death Shakes India: Key Accused Shot in Police Encounter, Two More Family Members Arrested

In a harrowing case of alleged dowry related violence that has sparked widespread outrage, a 28-year-old woman named Nikki Bhati succumbed to severe burn injuries after being assaulted and set ablaze by her husband and in-laws. The incident, which unfolded on August 21 in Sirsa village, has led to three arrests, including a dramatic police encounter where the primary suspect- her husband, was injured while attempting to flee custody.

Nikki, who had been married to Vipin Bhati since 2016, endured years of harassment and physical abuse stemming from unmet dowry demands amounting to Rs 36 lakh, according to her family's accounts. Despite her parents providing substantial gifts at the time of marriage, including a high-end Scorpio SUV, a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle, cash, and gold jewellery, the in-laws reportedly continued to pressure her for more. Nikki, a hardworking mother who operated a beauty parlour to support her six-year-old son, faced escalating torment, with her earnings often allegedly seized by the family.

The fatal attack occurred in the presence of Nikki's young son and her elder sister, Kanchan, who is married to Vipin's brother, Rohit Bhati, and has also reported similar mistreatment. Eyewitness descriptions reveal that Vipin slapped Nikki, struck her neck causing her to collapse, doused her with a flammable substance, and ignited her using a lighter. Kanchan attempted to intervene but was assaulted as well, though she managed to capture video footage of the brutality, which has since circulated widely online, showing Nikki being dragged by her hair and stumbling down stairs engulfed in flames.

Rushed to Fortis Hospital in Noida with over 70% burns, Nikki was later transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where she tragically passed away en route. A post-mortem examination confirmed the extent of her injuries, and her family performed her last rites amid growing calls for justice. Police swiftly registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, causing hurt, and criminal conspiracy, with potential dowry harassment charges pending further investigation. Vipin Bhati, the main accused, was apprehended shortly after the incident. In a tense development on August 24, while being escorted to recover evidence- a bottle of the inflammable liquid from his home, Vipin allegedly attempted to escape near Sirsa Chauraha. He reportedly snatched a police officer's pistol and fired at the team, prompting retaliatory gunfire that wounded him in the leg. He was recaptured and hospitalised for treatment before being remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

Hours later, authorities arrested Vipin's mother, Sans Dayawati (also referred to as Daya), based on a tip-off as she approached JIMS Hospital, presumably to visit her son. This marked the second arrest in the case. On August 25, police made a third apprehension: Rohit Bhati, Nikki's brother-in-law, who had been evading capture. Vipin's father, Satyavir Bhati, remains at large, with multiple teams deployed to locate him. Nikki's father, Bhikari Singh Payla, alleged the entire in-law family conspired against his daughter. He demanded severe retribution, including an encounter killing of the accused and the demolition of their home, drawing parallels to government actions against other criminals. "They are killers; they should be shot dead, and their house razed to the ground," Payla stated, emphasising that Nikki had tried to sustain the marriage despite the abuse to avoid burdening her family.

From his hospital bed, Vipin displayed a lack of remorse, dismissing the incident as a typical marital dispute and claiming, "I haven't killed her; she died on her own." He also posted on social media suggesting Nikki's death was a suicide, which investigators view as an effort to mislead the public.

The case has drawn national attention, with the National Commission for Women (NCW) taking suo-motu notice and directing the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police to ensure swift arrests, a fair probe, and protection for Nikki's family and witnesses. The NCW has requested a detailed action report within three days, underscoring the urgency to address such gender-based violence. This tragedy is grim reminder of the persistent issue of dowry deaths in India, still prevalent even after several social reforms and despite stringent law, and has ignited protests calling for stricter enforcement and societal change.
