Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan ‘fully healthy’, Adiala Jail responds to social media buzz; PTI seeks probe

Imran Khan, former Pakistan Prime Minister, is ‘fully healthy’ and remains incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, prison officials said in a statement amid speculation about the ex-PM’s death.

In a statement issued by the jail authorities, as quoted by Geo News, the jail authorities informed us that the news of the ex-Pak PM’s health is unverified and untrue. “There is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala jail. He is fully healthy,” the statement said.

The statement by the jail authorities comes amid swirling speculation on social media and through some news outlets questioning the whereabouts and condition of the former prime minister. According to them, “There is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala Jail,” dismissing such claims as “baseless”.

In addition to reaffirming his presence inside the jail, the administration emphasized that Imran Khan remains under constant medical supervision — a strong rejection of rumors about neglect, torture, or death, as reported by Pakistan Today.

This came after Khan’s sisters Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr. Uzma Khan claimed that the former Pak PM was held in solitary confinement in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Aleema had earlier claimed that Imran Khan was held in a “death cell” and was refused to interact with fellow prisoners even though his lawyers were denied meetings. Further, the sisters claimed that for three consecutive weeks they were refused a meeting with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaaf (PTI) Chair. Khan’s sisters and PTI supporters launched a sit-in protest outside Adiala jail as speculation went viral on social media.

Khan, who was ousted from power after losing a no-confidence vote in 2022, has been a trending topic on social media after an Afghan media outlet published unverified information about him succumbing to mistreatment in custody citing credible sources. They also wrote that the 72-year-old PTI leader’s body was removed from prison premises. Following this, the self-styled Balochistan Foreign Affairs Ministry also posted an old picture of Khan claiming that he was assassinated inside a cell, noting orders from Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif on Tuesday claimed that Khan is not just healthy but is living in luxurious conditions compared to his time behind the bars. While speaking to Geo News, Asif claimed that Khan was provided with a “5-star menu and a double velvet mattress.”

Adiala jail’s statement was aimed at quelling public anxiety and speculation that had surged in recent days — especially after claims from some quarters that the jailed leader had been moved or was in poor health.

As per reports by Pakistani media outlets, Islamabad debunked false reports further condemning Afghanistan Times. They compared the situation with a similar one last May. Meanwhile, Adiala Jail assured Khan’s sisters that they would arrange a meeting with Imran Khan and guaranteed passes for the coming Tuesday. This led PTI protestors at Gorakhpur checkpost to disperse peacefully.

Cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan has a myriad of allegations against him. He was first arrested, along with his wife, in 2023 in relation to a 7 billion bribery case, which was denied by the party’s top cadre. Later, he was accused of revealing classified information during 2022. He also faces charges of unlawful marriage with Bushra Bibi. Khan is also accused of selling state property worth 140million that he received during his term. Bibi was released on bail in October 2024 and has continued to lead support rallies for Khan. Khan was granted bail in the State Gift case in November 2024. However, he remains in jail for other cases.
