Election Commission early trends put BJP ahead of Congress in Chattisgarh; CM Bhupesh Bagel trailing as on 11am
In a contrast to the early trends shown on news TV channels giving Congress edge over BJP, the Election Commission website shows otherwise. According to the early trends, as per the Election Commission website, BJP is ahead of Congress, where BJP shown leading in 48 and Congress leading in 38, as on 11 am. The exit polls had predicted that a smooth sailing for Congress but the early trends indicate the grand old party may face a big disappointment.
The counting of votes in the election for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly began at 8 am. While the Congress is confident of retaining power, the BJP is hopeful of trumping Bhupesh Baghel's party. BJP is aiming for a comeback in the state it ruled for 15 years from 2003 to 2018.
Sitting CM Bhupesh Baghel is trailing from Patan constituency. His nephew and BJP candidate Vijay Baghel Leading. Vijay Baghel is currently a Member of Parliament from Durg. He had earlier defeated ‘kaka’ Baghel in the 2008 elections. In 2013 however Bhupesh Baghel had defeated his nephew Vijay Baghel in Patan by 9,343 votes. Bhupesh Baghel secured 68,185 votes, while Vijay Baghel on BJP ticket trailed behind with 58,842 votes.
