ED says “no objection”, SC grants AAP MP Sanjay Singh bail in alleged PMLA case
In a surprise move, Enforcement Directorate (ED) has given “no objection” concession to arrested AAP MP Sanjay Singh’s bail plea before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court on Tuesday has granted the AAP MP bail in the PMLA case concerning alleged money laundering in connection with the alleged Delhi Liquor police scam.
After the ED said that it had no objection to the court granting him bail, the Apex Court ordered the release of Sanjay Singh on bail, clarifying that the “Court has not expressed anything on merits” of the case. This comes a day after Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal was sent to judicial custody for the next 15 days after being arrested by ED on March 21 in connection with the same case.
Sanjay Singh was arrested in October last year, the second senior leader to have been arrested by the central agency after former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was arrested in February last year in connection with the same Delhi Liquor policy probe. The SC bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta and PB Varale have clarified there won’t be any restriction on Singh indulging in political activities during the period of bail.
After arresting him on October 4, 2023, ED had alleged that an employee of a businessman named Dinesh Arora had delivered Rs. 2 crores to Singh at his house on two different occasions in connection with the now scrapped liquor policy of the Kejriwal government. Arora had later turned into an approver in both the ED and CBI cases. Singh’s lawyers have so far maintained that no money has been found even after such allegations.
