Donald Trump Claims The Russia-Ukraine War Could End "Immediately" by Saudi Arabia's This Move
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday called on Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations to lower oil prices, stating that a reduction in oil costs could immediately end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking virtually at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump expressed surprise that such action had not already been taken, especially before the 2020 election.
"I am also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil. You have to bring it down, which, frankly, I am surprised they didn’t do before the election. That didn’t show a lot of love by them not doing it. I was a little surprised by that," Trump said. He further claimed, "If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately."
Trump tied the high cost of oil to the continuation of the war in Ukraine, suggesting that OPEC nations are partially responsible for the prolonged conflict. “Right now, the price is high enough that the war will continue. You have to bring down the oil price, you have to end that war. They should have done it long ago. They are very responsible, to a certain extent, for what's taking place. Millions of lives are being lost,” he added. Trump also emphasised that reducing oil prices could lead to lower interest rates globally.
Additionally, Trump again called for an immediate resolution to the war, warning that economic consequences such as taxes, tariffs, and sanctions could be used against Russia. "Before my address here today, I again called for an immediate resolution to the ongoing conflict," Trump said.
The US President reiterated his admiration for the Russian people and his past positive relationship with President Vladimir Putin. "I’m not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people, and always had a very good relationship with President Putin – and this despite the Radical Left's Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. He also reminded audiences of Russia’s sacrifices during World War II, stating, "Russia helped us win the Second World War, losing almost 60,000,000 lives in the process."
The war, which began in January 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine, has caused significant loss of life, with over 14,000 civilian casualties and millions displaced. Russia’s demands for NATO guarantees and its claims that Ukraine is a Western puppet remain central to the ongoing conflict.
