Delhi Hit by Earthquake, Government Warns of Possible Aftershocks

The Union government on Monday issued a warning to residents of Delhi and nearby areas after the city was rocked by a low-magnitude earthquake early in the morning. Authorities have cautioned the public about potential aftershocks following the initial tremors.
Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister for Earth Sciences, advised people in Delhi to stay calm and take appropriate safety precautions. “Following the earthquake tremors felt this morning in and around Delhi at about 5:36 AM, the authorities are keeping a close watch. Professional experts, as well as officials in the Ministry of Earth Sciences, are constantly monitoring the situation. However, it is advised to stay calm and exercise safety precautions and preparedness for possible aftershocks, if any,” said Singh. He added that regular updates would be provided through various communication channels and social media.
The earthquake, which struck at 5:36 AM, registered a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was located 9 kilometers east of New Delhi, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
While the earthquake's magnitude was relatively low, the proximity of the epicenter to the city made the tremors feel stronger than expected. Many residents, startled by the sudden jolt, rushed out of their homes in panic.
The NCS confirmed the earthquake details, stating, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.0, Occurred on 17-02-24, 5:36 AM IST, Lat: 28.59°N & Long: 77.16°E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 9 km E of New Delhi.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, urging residents to remain calm and follow safety protocols. He wrote on X, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.”
