CISF Team Arrives at RG Kar Medical College to Check on Security Measures
Senior officers from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) arrived at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday morning to assess and enhance security arrangements. The Supreme Court on Tuesday assigned the CISF to oversee security at the state-run hospital following a violent mob attack on August 15, which occurred days after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital.
The Supreme Court criticized the Kolkata Police’s handling of the situation. The Court questioned why the police failed to control the mob that stormed the hospital, damaging medical equipment and supplies on two floors. This violence occurred during widespread "Reclaim the Night" protests demanding justice for the murdered doctor. The top court expressed its inability to understand the state’s lack of preparedness for the vandalism, given the ongoing investigation.
The Court emphasized the need to restore a safe environment at the hospital so that doctors can return to their duties. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the Court that the central forces would secure the premises.
At the hospital, ongoing protests continue to demand justice for the victim. Meanwhile, Bengal police have arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case and suspended three officers, including two assistant commissioners, for their role in the vandalism. The suspended officers are Assistant Commissioners Shakir Uddin Sardar and Ramesh Shah Chowdhury, along with Inspector Rakesh Minz. The violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital occurred amid protests by women across West Bengal against the horrific crime.
