CBI files FIR against R G Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former Principal Sandip Ghosh in financial irregularities case.
The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lodged an FIR against R G Kar Medical College and Hospital’s ex-principal Sandip Ghosh on Saturday over alleged financial irregularities following an order from Calcutta High Court.
The court had issued directives on the basis of a petition filed by former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Akhtar Ali who requested a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into alleged financial misconduct at the medical college during Ghosh's tenure.
Based on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the SIT (Special Investigation Team) constituted by the State Government went to the CBI office in Nizam Palace on Saturday morning and handed over all the related documents following which an investigation was launched by the CBI into the corruption charges against Sandip Ghosh by filing an FIR after they received these documents.
Officers and lawyers of the Central Agency submitted a copy of today's FIR to the Chief Judicial Magistrate at the Alipore Court, reported news agency ANI quoting CBI sources. The High Court has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation within three weeks. The Court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for September 17 to review the report.
A PGT doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at the hospital on August 9. Later, the semi-naked body of the 31 year old woman was found in the seminar hall of the government run hospital in Kolkata. A civic volunteer in the welfare department of Kolkata Police was arrested in connection with the crime the next day. Following this, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the probe into the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation on August 13.
Following the brutal rape and murder incident, Students and Doctors alleged huge financial irregularities in R G Kar Medical College and Hospital and alleged that former Principal Sandip Ghosh is the 'kingpin' of all those scams. Later, the Kolkata Police initiated an investigation which was taken over by the SIT.
