Calcutta HC Transfers Financial Misconduct Probe at RG Kar MCH to CBI, SIT Hands Over Documents to Central Agency
The Calcutta High Court on Friday handed over the investigation into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the purported role played by former principal Sandip Ghosh from the West Bengal government's Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to reports, the SIT on Saturday morning has handed over all documents pertaining to the case to the CBI, in adherence of the High Court order.
Earlier this week, the state government established a four-member SIT to probe alleged financial misconduct at the hospital, where the body of a junior woman doctor on duty was discovered. Following the SIT's formation, the Kolkata Police launched an investigation into former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, accusing him of financial irregularities that occurred during his tenure.
Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent at the hospital, filed a petition requesting an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into Ghosh’s financial dealings. Ali claimed to have reported Ghosh's alleged irregularities to state authorities last year.
Hearing a petition filed by Akhtar Ali, the High Court, led by Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, decided to transfer the case to the CBI, citing the potential for delays and inefficiencies if multiple agencies investigated the same matter. The court also questioned why the SIT was only established a year after the initial allegations surfaced, particularly given the ongoing CBI investigation into the doctor’s rape and murder case.
