The body of 26-year-old Rosmita Hojai, a civil services aspirant from Assam, was discovered on Tuesday along the banks of a river in Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand. She had been missing since June 5, after informing her family she was returning by train from Delhi, where she had travelled to appear for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination.
Rosmita, a resident of Hojai village in Assam's Dima Hasao district, had completed her engineering studies in Haryana and was preparing for the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) examination in Guwahati. On June 6, she arrived in Rishikesh with two male companions, Hemant Sharma from Haryana and another friend. The trio had planned a camping trip in Shivpuri, but by evening, her friends reported her missing. A local resident claimed to have seen a woman drowning near the campsite, prompting fears that Rosmita may have been swept away.
Meanwhile, Rosmita's family in Assam had filed a separate missing report at Haflong police station after losing contact with her on June 6. Her mother, Solmodi Hojai, stated that her daughter had travelled alone for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam in Delhi. The family received two calls the next morning—one from an unidentified number where the caller, claiming to be a Uttarakhand police officer, alleged that Rosmita had died by suicide. Authorities are working to verify the caller’s identity and the claim’s legitimacy, reported Money Control.
Police have launched an investigation and detained two individuals in connection with the case. The detained persons have been identified as Hemant Sharma of Mohindergarh, Delhi, and Pankaj Kokar of Rohtak, Haryana. They are currently being questioned.
Rosmita's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and police are continuing their probe to determine the cause of her death. "We have sent the body for autopsy and started our investigation. At this point, we cannot ascertain anything. We have detained two persons and begun questioning," a police official said.
