BJP MLA from Bongaon South Summoned for SIR Hearing After Parents’ Name Deemed ‘not found’ in 2002 list

Swapan Majumdar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator representing Bongaon South, appeared at a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing on Friday, submitting the required documentation in response to a notice issued under the ongoing electoral roll revision process.

Majumdar, a duly elected public representative, attended the hearing at a madrasa in Bongaon and provided official records, including his birth certificate, passport, and his father’s death certificate, to substantiate his identity and eligibility. He explained that although his name and those of his parents were not found in the 2002 electoral roll, he was born in India and turned an eligible voter in 1999. He stated that he moved to Mumbai for work before finally enrolling on the voter list in 2012.

He further noted, “I could have provided documentary evidence from my maternal relatives to support my case, but I refrained. Instead, I have encouraged others to comply with the process in good faith.”

Reacting to the situation, Bongaon district Trinamool Congress (TMC) president Vishwajit Das said that Majumdar’s own party was responsible for the exclusion of Matua and other community members from the draft electoral list. He emphasized that the ruling party would extend support to Majumdar if he ultimately finds himself disenfranchised, adding that the Chief Minister has reiterated, “No one will be removed from the voter list unjustly.”

TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s close family members were also summoned for similar SIR hearings. While Dastidar alleged that the process constituted harassment, the Election Commission of India (ECI) clarified that omissions occurred because the family members had not correctly filled out enumeration forms or properly linked household members in the data, necessitating their appearance before hearing authorities.

On the other hand, Bengali film actor and MP from West Bengal’s Ghatal constituency, Dev, has been issued a notice to appear for a hearing under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) draft electoral roll for West Bengal was published on 16 December 2025 as part of the nationwide revision process. As part of this draft, the Election Commission of India removed 5,820,898 names from the voter list, over 58 lakh entries, due to classifications such as deceased, relocated, missing, duplicate, or other invalid entries. This deletion from the provisional roll has triggered significant political debate and has prompted hearings such as the one attended by Mr. Majumdar. The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on 14 February 2026 following the claims and objections period.
