Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra hits another snag: Assam police stops Rahul Gandhi and Congress workers from entering the state
Rahul Gandhi along with nearly 5,000 Congress workers trying to enter Guwahati on Tuesday was stopped by the state police. This move comes at a time when Congress has alleged that the Assam Government is creating roadblocks in the way of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra since it entered the state on Thursday.
"Assam CM, the Union Home Minister and the PM can break the rules, but we would never do such a thing. However, this doesn't mean that we are weak. Congress workers are 'Babbar Sher'," said Rahul Gandhi addressing a gathering near the Guwahati border. As per reports, the Congress workers clashed with the police forces at the Guwahati.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra had been denied permission to move through the thoroughfares of Guwahati as the yatra, as per the schedule, was slated to cross Assam after its stoppage at Meghalaya.
On Monday Rahul Gandhi was denied permission to enter Assam's Batadrava Satra temple, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva near Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma had asked Rahul Gandhi and his yatra entourage to not visit the temple at the time of the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony. The temple's managing body requested Gandhi to visit the temple after 3 pm. Rahul Gandhi along with the other Congress leaders sat down on a dharna after meeting with the roadblock.
