Bengal Court Convicts Two Accused in Farakka Gang-Rape And Murder; Chargesheet in 21 days, Conviction in 59 Days

Jangipur Court on Thursday convicted two men in connection with the rape and murder of a 9 year-old girl from Farakka, Murshidabad. Timeline of the Incident
The crime took place on October 13, 2024, when the 9-year-old girl was abducted by Dinabandhu Haldar while she was visiting her grandfather’s house during the Durga Puja festivities. Haldar had promised the girl Durga Puja flowers but took her away instead. When the girl did not return, her family began searching for her.
Her body was discovered inside a rag at Haldar's house. Neighbours, who had witnessed the abduction, confronted and assaulted Haldar, before the police arrested him.
Subhajit Haldar, the second accused, was arrested on October 19, 2024, after investigations revealed his involvement in the crime.
The Murshidabad Police initiated a case under the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) and filed the chargesheet within 21 days, on November 3, 2024.
The trial began just over a week later, on November 11, 2024, at Jangipur Court.
Response to the Verdict
Special Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee commented on the quick delivery of justice. “The case has been resolved in a short span of time, which is important for the victim’s family and for society. This is a serious crime, and timely justice helps deter such acts,” Chatterjee said. He also stated that the prosecution would seek the death penalty when the sentencing is announced on Friday.
