Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Sharif Omar Hadi, brother of slain Bangladesh student leader Osman Hadi, has alleged that the caretaker government led by Muhammad Yunus is attempting to evade accountability for his brother’s killing, despite the incident occurring during its tenure. Speaking at the Inquilab Moncho group’s Shahidi Shopoth programme, he claimed that the authorities have failed to demonstrate any visible progress in ensuring justice.
“You (interim Yunus government) have killed my brother Osman Hadi and now you are trying to create an issue out of it to derail the government…My brother has been killed while your regime has been in power, you cannot evade accountability,” brother of Osmar Hadi said at the gathering, as reported by Somoi News.
Omar also called on authorities to ensure a speedy trial of those responsible so that the election environment is not adversely affected.
He further warned that continued failure to deliver justice could have serious consequences, stating that if accountability is denied, those in power may one day be forced to flee the country. Reiterating his demand for transparency and due process, Sharif Omar Hadi urged the government to act decisively to uphold the rule of law and restore public confidence ahead of the elections.
Another keynote speaker, Inquilab Moncho member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, pointed at “deeper conspiracy” to destabilize Bangladesh using international agencies and “fascist regimes of the country.”
The situation in Bangladesh spiraled after the death of key leader of July Uprising, Sharif Osman Hadi. He was a Bangladesh student leader associated with youth and student political activism who was shot by masked assailants. Hadi succumbed to his injuries on December 18 in Singapore where he was undergoing treatment.
