Bangladesh Sends Diplomatic Note to India Requesting Sheikh Hasina's Extradition
The Md Yunus-led interim government of Bangladesh on Monday sent a diplomatic note to India, requesting the extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since August. Hasina, 77, fled Bangladesh on August 5 amid massive student-led protests that led to the collapse of her 16-year rule.
The Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) had earlier issued arrest warrants for Hasina, along with several former ministers, advisors, and military and civil officials, accusing them of "crimes against humanity and genocide."
Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Adviser to Bangladesh's interim government, confirmed the diplomatic move, telling reporters, "We have sent a note verbale (diplomatic message) to the Indian government saying that Bangladesh wants her back here for the judicial process."
Additionally, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam revealed that his office had sent a formal letter to India’s External Affairs Ministry, requesting Hasina’s extradition. "We have sent a letter to the foreign ministry regarding her extradition. The process is currently underway," Alam said, emphasizing that the extradition process is in progress.
Alam also clarified that an existing extradition treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi could facilitate Hasina’s return. "An extradition treaty exists between Bangladesh and India, under which she could be brought back," he added.
