Atishi Marlena swears in as the Chief Minister of Delhi
Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi on Saturday swore in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, following Arvind Kejriwal's resignation just days after he was granted bail in the Delhi liquor policy case. Atishi, at 43, is now the youngest person to hold this position in the capital.
Before taking the oath, Atishi met with Kejriwal and other AAP leaders ensuring a seamless transition within the party. Joining her in the cabinet are Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, and Kailash Gahlot, all retaining their ministerial roles. New to the cabinet is Mukesh Ahlawat, a first-time MLA from Sultanpur Majra.
Atishi's term is expected to be brief, as assembly elections in Delhi are slated for February next year. Previously, she held 14 portfolios, including finance, education, and revenue. Presently, Atishi is the second woman Chief Minister in the country.
Kejriwal announced his resignation on Sunday, shortly after receiving bail from the Supreme Court in a corruption case linked to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the excise policy. “I am going to resign from the CM position after two days. I will not sit on the CM chair until the people give their verdict,” said Kejriwal. He also called for elections to be held sooner.
