Violent clashes erupted between police and common people at Silchar in lower Assam over the alleged incident of brutal rape and murder of a 19-yr old girl. At least 4 policemen and 20 locals were injured in the clashes that started on Tuesday night as protesters resorted to road blockade along with the body of the deceased girl.

On July 15, the mutilated body of the 19 year old girl was found inside an abandoned under-construction building under mysterious circumstances in the Dwarbond area of Silchar in Cachar district. The girl had reportedly gone missing for four days prior to the recovery of her body. The family of the girl alleged that she was raped, murdered and then her body was burnt with acid.

The mob and the forces locked horns when thousands gathered at the Rangirkhari Point in Silchar town at around 7pm to protest against the alleged crime. Stones were reportedly pelted at police as the mob relented from removing their blockade. Police cracked down upon the protestors along with additional CRPF forces, called in after situation worsened. "A mob started throwing stones at the police, resulting in injuries to four officers," said Mr Numal Mahatta, the Cachar Superintendent of Police. Meanwhile police have started their investigation into the mysterious death of the girl, medical examination yet to confirm rape.
