Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday demanded immediate arrest of businessman Gautam Adani after US SEC charged the Adani Group Chairman, his nephew Sagar Adani and six others for allegedly offering over Rs 2,000 crore in bribes to Indian government officials for securing solar energy supply contracts with state electricity distribution companies. Rahul Gandhi while referring to the SEC’s filing before the US court, also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s of trying to protect Gautam Adani.

“PM Modi gave the call ‘ek hai too safe hai’. In India nothing will happen to Adani. As long as PM Modi is there, Adani is safe. Why is he still scot-free? In India Chief Ministers can get arrested but not Adani. Because Adani is protected by PM Modi. In fact PM Modi can’t do anything even if he wants”, said Rahul Gandhi during a press conference, further alleging that the country has been “hijacked” by Adani.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed charges against Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani, senior executives of Adani Green Energy Ltd., and Cyril Cabanes, a former executive of Azure Power Global Ltd., for their alleged involvement in a large-scale bribery scheme to a tune of more than Rs 2,000 crore, tied to a multi-billion-dollar solar energy project in India. The SEC alleges that the bribery was used to secure favourable deals with Indian government officials, while deceiving U.S. investors during critical financial transactions. According to a Reuters report, arrest warrants were issued in the United States for Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani, after a grand jury in New York indicted the businessman.

“We have been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe and will continue to do so. But we can guarantee, nothing would happen to Adani. However, this US indictment is a vindication for us the opposition that had been relentlessly trying to educate the people about Adani and Mr Modi. Pm is involved in corruption with Adani. Pm Modi is protecting him”, the Leader of Opposition added while claiming the matter will be raised in the upcoming winter session in the Parliament.
