“Amitabh Bachchan is Bharat Ratna”, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday while raising the demand for the highest civilian honour for the legendary actor. Mamata Banerjee is in Mumbai for the two day opposition India bloc meeting but on Wednesday after reaching the city she first went to ‘Jalsha’, the Bachchan residence and also tied Rakhi on Amitabh Bachchan. The Trinamool supremo questioned as why Bharat Ratna hasn’t been conferred upon him as yet.

“To me Amitabh Bachchan is Bharat Ratna. Their family is the number one family in India. They have made huge contributions to Indian cinema. He deserved it. Why it hasn’t been done as yet I don’t know, but had it been with me I would have done it immediately. On behalf of the people I call him the people’s Bharat Ratna” said Mamata Banerjee after meeting the superstar.

This wasn’t the first time Mamata Banerjee had raised this demand. In December 2022, during Kolkata International Film Festival, Mamata Banerjee had said the actor deserved it and that she would be raising the demand with the Government. “I am humbled by her gesture and it is her generosity. Mamata Banerjee is kind but I don’t deserve it and I don’t expect it either” the veteran actor, Amitabh Bachchan had told this on an interview to NDTV recently.

The opposition meet will bring more than 60 leaders from 28 political parties to Mumbai. Mamata Banerjee and RJD supremo Lalu Yadav are the first ones to reach the city on Wednesday. Mamata Banerjee later went and met former Maharashtra CM and Shiv Sena UBT Chief Uddhav Thackeray at his residence and tied rakhi on him on the occasion of Rakshabandhan.
