Amit Shah Announces the Creation of Five New Districts in Ladakh
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh on Monday. Shah stated that his move aims to enhance local governance and bring administrative benefits directly to residents. The newly created districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.
Taking to social media platform X, Amit Shah highlighted that the decision reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh. Shah stated, “In pursuit of Narendra Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.”
He further underscored the union government’s commitment to improving the region’s infrastructure and opportunities. “The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” Shah added.
Ladakh was granted Union Territory status in 2019, following the bifurcation of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. Currently, Ladakh is administratively divided into two districts—Leh and Kargil—both of which have their own autonomous district councils. With the addition of these five new districts, Ladakh will now have a total of seven districts.
