Accused in Saif Ali Khan Attack Case Reveals Entry into India via Meghalaya’s Dawki River
Shariful Islam, the accused arrested for attacking actor Saif Ali Khan, has made a startling revelation during police interrogation. He disclosed that he entered India illegally through the Dawki River along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border with the help of an agent. According to police sources, the accused paid ₹4,000 to the agent for assistance in crossing the border seven months ago.
The accused, who was struggling with unemployment in Bangladesh, sought to find work in India. Initially planning to cross the Bengal border, heightened security in the area led the agent to guide him via the river route. Shariful exploited the hilly and forested terrain of the Dawki River to enter India.
Mumbai Police Targets Agent Network
Police are now investigating the network of individuals who facilitated Shariful’s illegal entry. Efforts are also underway to track his activities in Mumbai since his arrival. Sources revealed that after entering India, Shariful traveled to West Bengal before moving to Mumbai in search of work.
In West Bengal, he used the Aadhaar card of a local resident, Khukmoni Jahangir Sheikh, to procure a mobile SIM card and attempted to create an Aadhaar card in his name, which failed. Using the SIM card, he stayed in contact with his family in Bangladesh.
In Mumbai, Shariful initially avoided jobs that required valid documentation. Later, a labor contractor, Amit Pandey, secured him employment at pubs in Worli and Thane. Police suspect that Shariful re-entered India with the intention of committing a major crime before returning to Bangladesh.
Dawki River: A Common Infiltration Route
The Dawki River, spanning 96 kilometers, runs along the India-Bangladesh border and serves as a trade route. Flowing through the Jaintia and Khasi Hills, it marks the border before merging with the Kaladan River in Bangladesh. This route, located near the Tamabil bus station in Bangladesh, is often exploited by infiltrators with the assistance of agents.
