Supreme Court stays conviction, Rahul Gandhi set to return to Parliament

The Supreme Court today stayed the conviction of Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case against him over his 'Modi surname' jibe, hereby opening the door of Indian Parliament once again for him. Rahul Gandhi was convicted by a trial court and was awarded maximum sentence of two years in the case. After being convicted Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from parliament and he had not let go of his official residence where he had been living as a Member of Parliament. Supreme Court while staying the conviction, had however observed that his remarks “were not in good taste”.

“Today or tomorrow, truth always wins. Whatever the case be, my road is clear. I have clarity as what I need to do. I am thankful to one and all who have supported me all this while”, said Rahul Gandhi, who is all set to return to the parliament. Soon after the SC order, celebrations began in the Congress camp that had so far criticised the conviction from Trial Court.

The Supreme Court while passing the order also said “the ramifications of disqualification not just affect the right of the individual but also the electorate,"

The Congress leader has also been active when it comes to the new opposition alliance bloc named INDIA and the SC order was welcomed by the allied parties.

TMC Supremo and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee took to social media welcoming the SC judgement. She wrote “I am happy with the news about the MP-ship of Rahul Gandhi. This will further strengthen the resolve of the INDIA alliance to unitedly fight for our motherland and win. A victory of the judiciary”

Jubilant Congress wrote on their social media – “ यह नफरत के खिलाफ मोहब्बत की जीत है। सत्यमेव जयते - जय हिंद”. (This is the victory of love over hatred, Satye Meva Jayate. Jai Hind)

The opposition alliance INDIA bloc is slated to meet in Maharastra by end of August, this would be their third meeting with an eye on 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
