A team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) arrived in Malda on Friday to assess the condition of those displaced by the recent spate of violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. The delegation visited a relief centre established at Par Lal Pur High School, where families from the affected areas have taken shelter. During their visit, the NHRC officials spoke with the displaced individuals to collect firsthand accounts of the incidents and evaluate the prevailing human rights situation.

The Commission had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the violent clashes that erupted during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. In response to the matter, the NHRC announced on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, that it would send a team for an on-the-ground investigation. This move followed the receipt of a formal complaint alleging human rights violations in the affected regions. The NHRC has directed the concerned authorities to submit a comprehensive report on the incidents within three weeks.

At least three people lost their lives in the clashes, which broke out in the Muslim-majority areas of Shamsherganj, Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur in Murshidabad district. The violence prompted many residents to flee their homes and take refuge in neighbouring Malda. The police have stated that those displaced have started to move back to their homes.
