Mamata Banerjee Urges Centre For Special Parliament Session on Pahalgam Attack, Operation Sindoor

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has urged the Centre to convene a special session of Parliament to brief the nation on the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent military operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor. Her remarks come in the wake of an all-party delegation's foreign tour aimed at garnering global support and sharing India’s counter-terror efforts.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee wrote, “I am glad to see all-party delegation visiting various countries as part of India’s global outreach against terrorism. As I have consistently maintained, the AITC stands firmly behind any step the Union takes in the national interest and in defence of our sovereignty.”
However, in a significant political development, she added, “I urge the Union Government to convene a special session of Parliament upon the safe return of the delegation, as I believe the people of this great nation have the foremost right to be informed about the recent conflict and the evolving developments — BEFORE ANYONE ELSE.” The post was accompanied by the Indian tricolour, underscoring her message of national solidarity.

With this call, the TMC becomes the second major opposition party after the Indian National Congress to demand a special parliamentary session focused on the recent terror strike and India's military response. The Congress had earlier criticised the Modi government for withholding detailed information and avoiding parliamentary scrutiny of the events in Jammu and Kashmir.
The demand for a special session gains further significance in light of reports emerging from a recent all-party meeting, where opposition leaders claimed the government tacitly acknowledged an “intelligence failure” preceding the Pahalgam attack. While there has been no formal confirmation or public admission from the government, the statement has added fuel to the opposition’s call for accountability and transparency.

Operation Sindoor, launched in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, that claimed the lives of 26 tourists, has been hailed as a “strategic success” by Indian Armed Forces in targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The operation was launched on may 7 and the Union Government had claimed that more than 100 terrorists were neutralised in Operation Sindoor. Later, the Ministry of External Affairs facilitated visits by an all-party delegation to multiple countries, aimed at presenting India’s narrative and exposing the hand of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan. TMC Nationals General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee is also part of one such delegation team touring Japan and several other countries.

Banerjee’s intervention signals growing pressure on the Modi administration to engage Parliament directly, not only to share operational successes but also to address questions around national security preparedness over and post Pahalgam attack.​
