In a key administrative move to bolster Mumbai’s internal security and intelligence apparatus, the Maharashtra government has approved the creation of a new post — Joint Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) — under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Police, Greater Mumbai.

The decision comes in light of Mumbai’s strategic importance as the financial capital of the country and the state’s administrative hub, which houses a large number of vital installations, high-risk VIPs, and frequent visits by national and international dignitaries including the President, Prime Minister, and foreign heads of state.

According to the government resolution issued on Friday, the newly created post will focus on strengthening intelligence operations and ensuring close and continuous monitoring of sensitive information. The government emphasized the need for an enhanced and foolproof security setup in view of the city’s high threat perception.

As per the order, the currently vacant post of Special Commissioner of Police (in the rank of Additional Director General of Police) within the Mumbai Police setup will now be downgraded to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) and re-designated as Joint Commissioner of Police (Intelligence).

Officials say the move is aimed at sharpening intelligence coordination and ensuring rapid threat assessment in a city that remains one of the most sensitive and high-profile targets for both domestic and transnational threats.
