In a statement issued on Friday, the Kuki civil society organizations have conveyed that no Kuki-Zo MLA should participate in the special session of the Assembly as their people have lost faith in the functioning of the state machinery.

“The Kuki-Zo people have irreparably lost trust and confidence in the state government, and therefore, any participation with the state government will be utterly aimless. Further, the Kuki-Zo people cannot be bounded by any resolution adopted by the special Assembly session, and will not accept any attempt to impose such resolutions on our land and on our people”, read the statement. This comes after the government’s inability to contain the violence entailing the ethnic clashes that have rocked the state of Manipur, since May 3.

The statement was drawn up after a meeting at Churachandpur between the leaders of Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), Kuki Chief’s Association, Kuki Students Organisation- General Headquarters, and the Kuki Women’s Union. KIM secretary of information and publicity, Janghaolun Haokip, later issued a statement on behalf of the aforementioned groups and it state that no Kuki-Zo MLA’s should participate in the proposed session, either in person or through video conferencing in the interest of the entire community.

It is important to note that among the 10 Kuki-Zo MLA’s, 7 are from the ruling party BJP, 2 from Kuki People’s Alliance, and 1 independent. In tandem to this, the statement read, “To that matter, any Kuki-Zo MLA participating in the special session must himself or herself hold all responsibility to answer to the people.”
