Five Feared Dead, Several Injured After Falling from Overcrowded Train on Mumbai’s Central Line

At least five commuters are feared to be dead and several others injured after falling from an overcrowded train on Mumbai’s Central Railway line on Monday morning, during peak rush hour. The incident.occurred between Diva and Kopar stations.
Preliminary reports suggest that between 10 and 12 passengers fell from a moving train en route to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). While some railway staff indicated that the train involved may have been the Pushpak Express, however, there remains some uncertainty over the exact identity of the service and the circumstances leading up to the fall.
Graphic videos shared on social media show bloodied victims being pulled off the tracks, many with torn clothing and visible injuries. Emergency teams rushed the wounded to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where they remain under medical supervision.
The tragedy has sparked widespread public anger and strong reactions from political leaders, many of whom criticised the government’s failure to address long-standing safety concerns in Mumbai’s overburdened railway network.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Harshvardhan Sapkal sharply criticised the administration, blaming systemic neglect and corruption for the incident. “This was not an accident; it is the result of chronic government negligence and misplaced priorities,” Sapkal said. “For over a decade, Mumbaikars have been promised better infrastructure. But instead, we see a corrupt system that thrives on tenders and commissions. Ordinary citizens are paying with their lives due to systemic collapse," he added.
He called for immediate, structural reforms in Mumbai’s suburban rail system, urging authorities to move beyond “event-driven politics” and implement durable safety measures.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also responded to the tragedy, calling it “deeply distressing” and stressing the urgent need for action. “This incident underlines the urgent need to address overcrowding in suburban trains. Passenger safety must be prioritised,” Pawar stated. “I am confident that the railway administration will take swift corrective action," he added.
Railway authorities have ordered an official inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, political leaders across party lines are renewing calls for comprehensive reforms, including increasing train frequency, deploying more coaches, improving platform infrastructure, and enforcing better crowd control measures.
