Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has found himself in fresh controversy following a social media comment that allegedly contained derogatory language targeting the Brahmins. Advocate Ashutosh J. Dubey, a practicing lawyer at the Bombay High Court and a member of the Brahmin community, has filed a formal complaint with the Mumbai Police, seeking registration of an FIR against the director.

According to Dubey’s complaint, Kashyap commented on Instagram saying, “If I urinate on a Brahmin, is there a problem?” A statement the advocate described as “disgraceful, vulgar, and deeply offensive.” In his letter to the Commissioner of Police, Dubey argued that the comment incites hatred and ill-will against the Brahmin community, and violates provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. He cited sections 194(1), 195, and 356(2) of the BNS, which pertain to promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult to religious or caste sentiments, and spreading communal hatred.

“As a public figure, Mr. Kashyap has a moral responsibility to maintain dignity and not target any community with hateful speech,” Dubey stated in the letter. He urged the Mumbai Police to take immediate cognizance of the matter, register an FIR, and initiate a thorough investigation.

On the statement Kashyap wrote on Insta Post, “Everyone has read the response and of course, they’re outraging, setting everything on fire. At least look at the context before writing, you cowards. The laziest people who’ve spent their whole lives hiding behind scriptures, never doing anything worthwhile themselves, only trying to bring others down to make themselves look superior. To me, you people will always remain fools.”
