Five Coaches of Puducherry-Bound Train Derail Near Villupuram, No Injuries Reported
At least five coaches of a Puducherry-bound passenger train derailed near Villupuram railway station in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday morning. Fortunately, the quick thinking of the loco pilot, who immediately stopped the train, prevented a major accident.
Railway staff reported that all passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries were sustained in the incident, according to news agency PTI. The cause of the derailment will be determined after a thorough inquiry is completed, railway officials added.
Repair work is already underway, with railway engineers and staff rushed to the scene to assess and address the situation. Despite the disruption, authorities have cleared the route, allowing other trains to continue their journey.
The MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train, which had departed Villupuram at 5:25 am, was crossing a curve when it derailed. The loco pilot's prompt action in halting the train prevented any further damage. MEMU trains typically operate on short-distance routes, covering about 38 kilometers.
The Villupuram Railway Police have initiated a detailed investigation into the cause of the derailment.
This incident follows a similar derailment last week in Andhra Pradesh's Palnadu district, where a goods train heading to the Vishnupuram Rashi Cement Factory derailed near Srinavaspuram. As a result, trains on the Guntur-Hyderabad route were diverted to the Vijayawada path.
