The West Bengal Medical Council on Thursday canceled the medical registration of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, amid an ongoing CBI investigation. This decision follows a show cause notice previously issued by the council, seeking Ghosh's explanation regarding the status of his medical registration.

Sandip Ghosh is currently in CBI custody after being arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a woman medic who was on duty at RG Kar Hospital. He was apprehended alongside Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station, for their alleged roles in evidence tampering. Following the arrests, the Kolkata Police suspended Mondal.

According to reports, Ghosh's name has been removed from the list of Registered Medical Practitioners as of September 19. The cancellation of his license was enacted under various provisions of the Bengal Medical Act.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal had urged Sudipto Roy, the president of the West Bengal Medical Council to expedite the cancellation of Ghosh's medical registration. In a letter signed by state president Dilip Kumar and former national president Santanu Sen, the IMA emphasized the need for immediate action against Ghosh.

The former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal was first arrested by the CBI in connection with a case pertaining to financial irregularities flagged by the students at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He was arrested for the second time by the central agency for his alleged role in evidence tampering in connection with the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old PGT doctor of RGK MCH on August 9.
