West Bengal Assembly Set to Discuss Motion Condemning Manipur Violence on July 31

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay has confirmed that a motion to discuss and condemn the ethnic violence in Manipur, which resulted in more than 160 fatalities, will be brought before the West Bengal assembly on July 31. The resolution to propose a motion in the assembly was determined in an "all-party meeting" earlier this week, a meeting that the opposition BJP opted to abstain from.

During Wednesday's Business Advisory (BA) committee meeting, the date for tabling the motion was set for July 31. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, is slated to be one of the speakers on the motion. Banerjee has pointed to the "divisive" policies of the BJP-led governments at the Centre and Manipur as being responsible for the ethnic conflict in the northeastern state.

Chattopadhyay relayed to reporters that the motion will be presented in the assembly on Monday, offering a platform to discuss the prevailing situation in Manipur and the humanitarian crisis the northeastern state is enduring.

Expressing his thoughts on the proposal, Chattopadhyay stated that the entire nation is shocked and dismayed by the violence and torment experienced by the women and children in Manipur.
