Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves UCC Draft, Bill Likely To Be Tabled On February 6

Uttarakhand is all set to become the first state in independent India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after the bill is passed in the state assembly on February 6. The draft of The UCC was approved and passed in a cabinet meeting chaired by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday. BJP has 47 MLAs in the 70-member house, the majority will ensure a comfortable passage of the bill when tabled on Tuesday.

The cabinet clearance came two days after the five-member UCC committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, submitted its report to the chief minister. “In today's cabinet meeting, a proposal has been approved to present a Uniform Civil Code in the upcoming legislative Assembly session and to complete the formalities to introduce it in the form of legislation.”, said the chief minister after the cabinet meeting

UCC was part of BJP’s election manifesto during the 2022 assembly polls. A special four-day session of the Uttarakhand Assembly has already been convened from February 5-8. “We promised our people to bring the UCC in Uttarakhand before the Assembly goes into session. The rollout of the UCC will be in line with a resolution adopted by the BJP”, CM Dhami said during a separate event after the cabinet’s approval. As the name suggests, the draft of the UCC bill has proposed a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens irrespective of caste and community.
