Tributes to Victims of Ahmedabad Air Disaster to Precede India–England Test at Headingley

Before a ball is bowled at Headingley on Friday, cricket will take a moment to pause as India and England pay tribute to the victims of the recent Ahmedabad air disaster. In a gesture of solidarity and remembrance, both teams will observe a minute’s silence and wear black armbands ahead of the opening Test.

The tragedy, which occurred on 12 June, claimed the lives of 274 people when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The aircraft struck a hostel block at B.J. Medical College in the Meghaninagar area. Among the deceased were 181 Indian nationals and 53 British citizens, making the tribute especially meaningful for both sides. Only one person survived the crash.

As the teams prepare to take the field, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant spoke about the emotional weight of the occasion and the role sport can play in national healing. “What happened with the aircraft, the whole of India was saddened by it,” Pant said. “The only thing from our side, we’re going to be sticking to how we can make India happy again. The emotion is going to be high always because of what happened in the crash, but at the same time, we are going to put our best foot forward for the country. How we can make them happy is an added responsibility,” he added.

The disaster has reverberated far beyond India, drawing condolences from the global cricketing community, with many expressing support for the victims’ families and those affected.

Friday’s match also marks the beginning of a crucial World Test Championship cycle for both teams. For India, the series carries additional significance as it marks the start of a new chapter in Test cricket, following the recent retirements of senior players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
