TMC MP Mahua Moitra sends letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla regarding Apple's alert

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra sent a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday to draw his attention to the ongoing controversy revolving around the alert sent by Apple to several Opposition ministers warning them of possible 'state-sponsored attacks' on their devices on Wednesday.

Taking to X, she posted her letter and wrote "Just written to Hon’ble Speaker @loksabhaspeaker on serious issue of surveillance on Opposition members in violation of Constitutional freedoms & rule of law." This comes hours after her previous post where she shared her letter addressed to the Ethics Committee dated October 31 centering on the allegations of unethical conduct against her.

On October 31, several leaders of the Opposition INDIA Alliance including TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Congress' Shashi Tharoor and Pawan Khera, Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, and AAP's Raghav Chadha shared screenshots of alerts that they received from Apple warning them that ‘state-sponsored attackers’ maybe targeting their devices.

Moitra called the threats "doubly shocking" after the Pegasus software was allegedly used by the government to snoop into devices owned by the Opposition ministers, journalists and others between 2019 and 2021.

In her letter, referring to the alleged attacks, Moitra called it the "worst attack" on the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India. Calling Om Birla the "proverbial keeper of the faith, guardian of the Lok Sabha and the ultimate parent to each of its Members", Moitra requested immediate "protection" from such attacks.
