TMC Abhishek Banerjee is taking a short break from ‘organisation’… Know why

Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and re-elected member of parliament Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday announced of taking a ‘short hiatus’ from ‘the organisation’ and political activities owing to medical reasons. The announcement came days after TMC’s landslide victory in Lok Sabha 2024 elections in Bengal, winning 29 out of 42 seats. Both TMC supremo and Abhishek Banerjee had campaigned extensively across the state for over three months as Bengal saw elections spread over all seven phases.

“Last year around this time, I had the opportunity to participate in NABOJOWAR Yatra and traveled across West Bengal to understand the issues and challenges faced by people on the ground. Witnessing firsthand the hardships caused by RISING PRICES and the stoppage of MGNREGA dues deeply affected me. In response, TMC organized statewide protests and took the matter to Delhi to fight for people's rights. Thankfully, this was addressed in February, along with an increase in financial assistance through the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme to help families," Banerjee posted on his ‘X’ handle.

Last time when Abhishek Banerjee had gone silent over TMC’s day to day affairs, speculations had erupted if everything was fine between the old and the new camps in the party. Both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee had dismissed such speculations calling TMC a united house, yet for the party cadres the assurance came more when Abhishek Banerjee started leading the Lok Sabha campaign along with the party supremo. Thus the announcement on Wednesday had stoked some confusion. Sources close to the Diamond Harbour MP say that he “may undergo a surgery at a city hospital early next week and following his oath in Parliament he may have to travel abroad to pursue his eye treatment”. Sources also add that due to extensive campaigning, “his eye checkup has been pending since March this year”.

“In light of some pressing medical reasons, I will be taking a short hiatus from the organisation. This time off will be an opportunity for me to humbly explore and understand the needs of our people and community. I trust that GoWB will act swiftly and leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for those in need”, Banerjee added.
