They- identified as Subhash Podar, Manish Mistry and Shubham Jaiswal, who worked as trackmen, allegedly conspired to derail a train near Kim railway station by removing fishplates and keys from a railway track. In fact they themselves alerted their superior after allegedly committing the crime but they communicated it, as if they have noticed the missing fishplates and how their vigilance had helped thwart a massive tragedy.

Background

At around 5.25am on Saturday trackman Subhash Podar informed railway authorities that he had noticed several locks on the track open along with two fishplates between the Kim and Kosamba railway stations. Podar had reportedly claimed whiling informing the authority that he had noticed three men run away seeing him near the tracks. He, while on patrol had noticed the missing keys on the track, thereby alerting of a possible suspicion of sabotage.

Two trains, including the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani, had passed over the tracks just before the purported sabotage was discovered and another train was supposed to cross the same section soon after, but was stopped at the Kosamba station. Podar along with two other accomplices had repaired the tracks and was hoping for reward and felicitation.

According to police after their arrest, alleged admission was made that they wanted their night shifts to continue. And in order to make their night shift work look significant for vigilance, the alleged sabotage was conspired. Following every night shift trackman get the following day as an off. In want for an additional day off so that they could spend extra time with the family, they had conspired to create the scene of sabotage, claimed police officials. They had hoped that after informing the authorise their work will be recognised, acknowledged with rewards and also would have ensured continuation of their job and their ‘cherished’ night shift.
