“They tried to suppress my voice….”: PM Modi hits out at the Opposition at the beginning of the Monsoon Session

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Opposition at the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, accusing them of disrupting previous sessions. A day before his government is set to present the first budget of his third term; PM Modi outlined the session's agenda and issued a combative appeal to the Opposition.

"In the first session of Parliament, attempts were made to stifle the voice of a government elected by the people. For 2.5 hours, they tried to suppress my voice," said Prime Minister Modi condemning what he termed as unconstitutional attempts to silence the government. In reference to protests by the Opposition during the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, Modi criticized attempts to “silence” a democratically elected government. He emphasized that Parliament exists for the nation's benefit, not for any particular party's interests. "We must move away from negative politics that has plagued Parliament and focus on constructive discussions," he added.

The Prime Minister went onto underscore the significance of the upcoming Union Budget, describing it as crucial for setting the course for the next five years and laying the groundwork for realizing India's aspirations by 2047 under the vision of 'Viksit Bharat'. He expressed hope for a positive and productive session that would fulfill the nation's dreams.

"It is now the duty of all MPs to work for the country, not just their respective parties, for the next five years." Said the Prime Minister addressing MPs across party lines, urging them to prioritize national interests over partisan agendas. He called for an end to negative politics and emphasized the importance of a constructive approach in Parliament to effectively serve the people, particularly in empowering marginalized communities such as the poor, farmers, and women. The Prime Minister called upon parliamentarians to use the session as an opportunity to enrich democracy and fulfill the aspirations of the people.​
