Supreme Court Slams NTA for “Flip-Flops” in NEET-UG 2024, Orders Immediate Improvements
The Supreme Court on Friday sharply criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) for its handling of the NEET-UG 2024 examination. The Court instructed the NTA to avoid the "flip-flops" that had plagued the exam process, stating that such inconsistencies do not benefit the students.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who led a three-judge bench, emphasized the need for reform. “We cannot afford this for the betterment of the students,” he said. The Court pointed out that the expert committee must address the deficiencies in the exam system, noting that numerous flaws had been exposed in the NTA’s management of the NEET-UG.
Despite acknowledging some irregularities, including paper leaks in Patna and Hazaribagh, the Supreme Court found no evidence of a "systemic breach" that compromised the entire exam. The Court directed the Centre to rectify these issues within the year to prevent future problems. The Apex court also called for technological advancements to improve the examination system. This includes implementing standard operating procedures for cybersecurity, enhanced identity verification, and increased CCTV monitoring at exam centers.
The bench has expanded the remit of the committee led by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan, tasking it with a comprehensive review of the NTA’s operations and the formulation of recommendations for reform. The committee is expected to submit its report by September 30, detailing measures to address the identified deficiencies.
Earlier, on July 23, the Supreme Court had dismissed pleas for canceling and retaking the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The Court concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove that the exam was "vitiated" by a systemic breach. This ruling provided relief to the NTA and the government amid intense criticism and protests over alleged malpractice during the exam held on May 5, 2024. More than 23 lakh students participated in the NEET-UG for admissions to medical and allied courses.
