Security Heightened as Re-polling Begins in the Violence Affected Booths of Inner Manipur

Re-polling commenced at 11 polling stations in the inner-Manipur Parliamentary constituency on Monday following reports of violence during the initial polling day on April 19. The Election Commission ordered the re-polling after incidents of miscreants opening fire and damaging EVMs were reported at several polling booths in Manipur. Security measures have been heightened to prevent further violence during the re-polling process.

The affected polling stations include Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School, S. Ibobi Primary School (East Wing), amongst others. As per reports, the residents have expressed concerns over the incidents of violence and the impact on the electoral process. Despite the challenges, residents have emphasized the importance of voting and have shown up to participate in the re-polling. 

On April 19, clashes broke out at several polling booths, resulting in one person being injured due to firing incidents. The violence disrupted the voting process at multiple locations, necessitating re-polling at the affected stations. Manipur Chief Electoral Officer announced the re-polling after the Election Commission declared the initial polls void.

The Lok Sabha elections in Manipur witnessed a voter turnout of 69.18 percent till 7 pm on April 19. The remaining polling for the Outer Manipur constituency will be conducted in the second phase on April 26, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 4.
