RG Kar Case: Arrested Former Principal Sandip Ghosh Rearrested By CBI Along with A Kolkata Police Officer In The Doctor Rape & Murder Case, Sent To CBI Custody Till Sept 17
In first arrests since the case of brutal rape and murder of RG Kar doctor was handed over to them, CBI on Saturday evening arrested a Kolkata Police officer for his alleged involvement in tampering of evidences. CBI also showed former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh, who is already arrested by CBI in connection with the probe into corruption charges, rearrested in the rape and murder probe.
The officer-in-charge of Tala police station, the local police station under which comes the RG Kar hospital, Abhijit Mondal was one of the first officers to have reached the hospital on the fateful day of August 9 after the body of the 31 year old PGT medical student was discovered under mysterious circumstances. The primary allegation against him has been the delay in the filing of the FIR. Both Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal were produced before the court on Sunday, sent to CBI custody till Tuesday. So far in connection with the rape and murder only Sanjoy Rai was arrested by Kolkata Police and later handed over to CBI after the matter was transferred to the central agency by the Calcutta High Court on August 13.
The three sections slapped against them are section 238, 199 and 61 (2) of the newly inducted BNS 2023. Section 238 of the new law reads deliberate attempt to “destroy evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender”. Inside the court the CBI lawyer claimed that there is a possibility of a larger conspiracy and that needed to be probed. Sandip Ghosh has been brought back to the CBI office in salt Lake from the correctional home. “If need be there can be a joint interrogation. Both the accused are in our custody and they had spoken once over phone on August 9 morning” said a CBI officer while leaving the court premises post the production of Mondal.
The RG Kar matter will come up for hearing before the bench of the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud in Supreme Court on Tuesday. The bench too had previously expressed dismay of the delay of around 14 hours in filing of the FIR. CBI had previously given two status reports in the matter ins sealed envelops and the agency was expected to file its latest status report before the top court on Tuesday.
