President Draupadi Murmu Nominates Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha; PM Modi Hails it as a “Powerful Testament” to “Nari Sahkti”

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday appointed author and philanthropist Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on social media expressed his joy at Murty's nomination to the Rajya Sabha, stating that her presence in the Rajya Sabha serves as a “powerful testament” to “Nari Shakti”.

“I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji's contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our 'Nari Shakti', exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation's destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” posted the PM Modi on “X”.

The President of the country gets to nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha for their contributions to the fields of arts, literature, sciences and social services. The nomination of Sudha Murty comes on the day of International Women’s Day.

Sudha Murty is a renowned philanthropist, author, and former head of the Infosys Foundation. Murty received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2006 and was later honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2023. She has actively participated in public healthcare initiatives with the Gates Foundation, and her philanthropic endeavors include establishing orphanages, supporting rural development projects, advocating for computer and library facilities in Karnataka government schools, and establishing the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University. . She is married to Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, and her son-in-law is UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.​
